ILO Bangladesh Country Director Max Tuñón and Chief Technical Advisor Ruchika Bahl met with Ms. Fahmida Akhter, NDC, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism (MoCAT), to discuss opportunities for strengthening skills development and promoting sustainable tourism in Bangladesh.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized the need for stronger local tourism governance and effective follow-up through District Tourism Development Committees (DTMCs). The Secretary sought ILO’s technical support in several key areas, including:
- Standardized tourism skills training through the Ministry’s upcoming training institute in Cox’s Bazar;
- Collaboration with the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation on tourism training initiatives;
- Review of the National Tourism Master Plan in partnership with the Bangladesh Tourism Board;
- Technical inputs on the zero draft of the National Community-Based Tourism Policy; and
- Collaboration on the Harmony Festival 2026.
The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of MoCAT and the ILO to enhancing tourism sector skills, creating inclusive decent work and employment opportunities, strengthening local governance mechanisms, and promoting sustainable tourism development across Bangladesh.
